Marriage Preparation Course (MCP) at Touch Community Services
We have finally finished our Marriage Preparation Course (MCP) with Touch Community Services! A big thank You to Kay Ping and Rosalind, our facilitators, who have been really kind and helpful in sharing their own experiences of the marriage journey.
Some friends are surprised that we went for the marriage preparation course and usually their first questions are:”Why do you need other people to tell you about your own marriage?” or “why do you need other people to tell you how to communicate with each other?”
To be frank, what prompted us to sign up was we were facing differences in communication, family, and the impending marriage and there were alot of frustration and stresses on our relationship. Thus we thought it might be good to learn from others who have been throught it all. After all, marriage is a HUGE decision and we are both new at it! Even seemingly simple, almost automatic tasks/actions such as walking and reading needs to be learned, what’s more something as important as marriage building?
What is good about the course is that it lists down objectively what are the major issues and encourage us to talk openly about it….sometimes we have an inkling of our differences and the areas of contention at the time of dispute but it was neither the time or place to talk about it. And sometimes, you just sweep it under the carpet and seemingly forget about it…until the next volcanic eruption.
I really liked what Kay Ping and Rosalind said about marriage: “Your marriage is unique!” because both of us are individuals and come from very different family backgrounds and have very different communication styles. I have realised that this is only the tip of the ice berg, marriage really takes constant work and adjustment….”It doesn’t just fall into place” – which is like the worst myth I have heard about marriage!
I saluate those who have been married and still constantly working on their commitment to each other, and urge those thinking about bringing their relationship to the next stage to attend a MPC….
